A Girl Who Touched Space and Hearts
In a small town called Karnal in Haryana, India, a little girl once looked up at the night sky with wonder in her eyes. That little girl was Kalpana Chawla, born on March 17, 1962, and she would go on to become India’s first woman in space—an astronaut, engineer, and eternal inspiration.
Kalpana’s childhood was filled with questions, books, and dreams. While most children played on the ground, she dreamed of flying beyond the clouds. Her family supported her curiosity, even when girls choosing aeronautics was unheard of.
She studied at Tagore Baal Niketan School in Karnal and later earned a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Punjab Engineering College—the only girl in her batch. Determined to go further, she moved to the United States, where she earned two master’s degrees and a PhD in aerospace engineering.
But it wasn’t easy. Kalpana faced cultural shocks, homesickness, and the immense pressure of being an Indian woman in a foreign, male-dominated field. Yet, she never gave up.
In 1997, her dream turned into reality when she flew aboard Space Shuttle Columbia STS-87, becoming the first Indian-born woman in space. She was calm, intelligent, and respected by her crew. Her message to Indian students:
“The path from dreams to success does exist.”
In 2003, during her second mission, tragedy struck. Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated on re-entry, and Kalpana, along with six others, lost her life. But her legacy lives on.
